    Default share your repertoire

    Hi

Trying to make good business by playing covers is very hard. The key is to very original and compete for quality not for price!

So, lets help witch other here.

Share songs from your repertoire that you thing are very original choices.

    Mine:

    Elvis - Blue sued shoes
    Monkees - I'm a believer
Sting & The Police - Roxane
    Eric Clapton - Layla

Let's share and raise that bar of the cover's market (if you raise the quality of all bands the market evolves).

The trouble with choosing covers is different bands will inevitably think alike, so generally you all end up playing the same stuff regardless. When you pick covers like Vertigo, Dakota, Valerie, Chasing cars etc then you know every other local band is gonna be doing them cos that's what people want to hear. Other popular stuff is gonna be Greenday, Muse, Fratellis, Killers etc at the moment.

We have about 70 songs we gig but there's only a few I haven't heard anyone else cover. Those are

    Fake plastic trees
    Hotel California
    I found out (Pigeon detectives)
    Jenny don't be hasty
    Mama Mia

I bet there's loads of bands who do cover those songs though, The only song I haven't done in your list above is Roxane. Actually I should nick that for our sets

The band I'm in is cool as there's a male & female singer, so the male voice gets to do stuff like Ballroom Blitz & My Sharona and he can reach air-raid siren, so we've stuck Run to the Hills in the set But with the female voice, we do stuff like Vow by Garbage, and one of the Natalie Imbruglia ones as well as more obvious stuff like Blondie, The Pretenders & Patti Smith; oh, we also do Barracuda by Heart, which I imagine is pretty uncommon...

Despite the fact we're largely metal heads, the set is mostly a mix of 70s glam rock & 80s new wave, with a smattering on 90s alt rock.

We do a few uncommon ones, probably not unique but certainly not done by many cover bands.

    Natural Born Boogie -Humble Pie
All Or Nothing - Small Faces
    Paper Plane - Status Quo
Back In The Night - Dr Feelgood
    Framed - Alex Harvey
    Handbags and Gladrags - Chris Farlowe/Rod Stewart/Stereophonics

I've also suggested a few fairly unusual ones to maybe give us something different from the usual cover bands...

    Teaser - Tommy Bolin
    Broken Down Angel - Nazareth
    Coz I Luv U - Slade
Strange Kind Of Woman - Deep Purple
    Queen Bitch - David Bowie

    Nice! A lot of ideas.

Another thing that may happen is that, because we are from different countries, the concept of uncommon may vary between us...

The 4 songs I mentioned are very uncommon in my country. But by the replies I can see that they you guys consider them common...

    That's a good thing!

Thanks a lot for the replies, you are helping me a lot!

    Some more from my set:

    Magadeth - Symphony of destruction

    Metallica - fade to black

ac/dc - back in black (believe it or not it is uncommon around here. Most bands go for "high way to hell" or "you shock me all night log" of course we do those as well... )

iron maiden - Run to the hills, number of the beast, fear of the dark (ok! common! but they always work very well)

Ugly kid joe - Every thing about you

Bon jovi - You give love a bad name

    Many thanks

    Antonio

Hey 'StageStruck' Teaser eh?...good call, thought it was just me that plays Tommy's stuff.
PS skip Strange kinda woman & try a few tracks from
'Come Taste The Band'. how does 'Gettin Tighter' or 'Dealer' grab you?
    Always works for me.

I wanted to do Wild Dogs, but the singer can't sing it

Another one I've forgotten - Love by John Lennon. Only ever did it twice. Once at my wedding, and once to record it for my wife

Would love to do just about anything from Come Taste The Band, especially Getting Tighter stretched out the way DP tackled it during the tour they done with Tommy! No doubt our singer would say 'it's a bit obscure... grr!'
Tommy Bolin is vastly underrated IMO, solo and with DP, would have been interesting to see what he could have come up with had he lived
