Default Poll : P4 users do you experience denormalization spikes

OK its that same bloody dillema again!

    AMD or P4 :!:

I want a P4 but i dont know whether its worth it with the "spike" problem, so I was wondering does eveyone with a P4 experience it?

I will beusing lots of VSTi's and FX so its gonna be crucial to decide whether P4 is a no-no.

Im not really interested in toher AMDvsIntel issues ad right now the "spikes" are the ONLY thing holding me back

If people do experience spikes, you could list the program used while getting spikes too.

I'm curious what you have against athlons which deliver much better performance for the same money. Just stay away from VIA chipsets and you shouldn't have any compatibility problems.

    Hi,
I'm using a P4 2.0, Asus P4B266, 512mb DDR, Cubase 5.1, FL 3.56, Orion Platinum etc, etc and yeah, I've had my fair share of this prob'. The main culprits seem to be samplebased vsti's, Halion, Battery, etc and a few vst fx are affected as well. It seems all vsti's done with Synth Edit are also affected. None of the vst's/fx are unusable, it only seems to happen with certain sounds/presets. If you haven't already seem this, it's worth a look http://phonophunk.phreakin.com/p4denormal.html He gives some great info on this problem. The spikes affect all cpu's, including P3+AMD, but they are most obvious with P4's. With a bit of research on the plugins you will be wanting to use, find out if/how badly they are affected, you can still get a great P4 setup. That said, my next upgrade will be to a AMD setup, mainly because of cost, nothing else.

Yeah I did see that! Sometimes it seems that people just get set on a particular course of action without having made a considered decision. For example many people go out and buy P4s simply because they have a higher clock speed, mistakenly thinking they therefore offer better performance for the same money.

I was just curious why he had written off athlons completely,

Hi, like I said I want to avoid a AMD vs INtel debate but........

The reason why im thinking Intel is purely for stability reasons and the fact that the vast majority of programs have been optimized for intel. Im not taking anything away from AMD and I know they have a massive happy user base but (at the risk again of inciting violence in the streets) I get the feelin from reading that intel are that little bit more reliable/sensible and dont have as much of an issue with overheating.........here we go again!

    ......let battle commence

The best way to avoid a debate is to say "I've decided this because... can people check my reasoning", instead of "I've decided this. Tell me I'm right".

    Im using a P4 1.8A OCed to 2.4GHz, on a Epox 4BDA2+ with 512 MB Samsung DDR.

Not sure how to answer cos i have seen the VST performance spiking when using particular VSTis, but it has never caused any audible glitches/dropouts or anything. The VST bar just spikes from around 20~40% upto around 80% then goes back down. With VST performance window shut id never know it was happening.

I could try opening loads of VSTi and effects to try and load it upto about 60-70% at 'idle' then see what happens with the spiking?
