    What the fuck's a spike?
I thought it was a 2nd rate haircut I had in primary school, but I fail to see how Intel could be held responsible for my dismal aesthetic judgement as a youth. Please enlighten.

Well as the spikes effect ALL processors and not just P4, plus is as a result of using the old instruction set rather than the new set, I think you can safely say it will be resolved and patches will be made available so any software you have.

Stability is NOT an issue with an Athlon system. I've had an Athlon XP 2000+ running non-stop running as a database server now for 5 months. It hasn't even been rebooted.

P4 is a *safer* processor if you are going to move the unit about because it is immune to catastrophe's such as heat-sinks falling off. Very rare but a risk if you plan to lug your PC around in vans to and from gigs.

Athlon's are far more powerful in terms of speed for the money. I am in the fortunate position of having both a P4-2GHz and Athlon XP 2000+ and I can assure you that most programs run faster on the Athlon! The only exception is the MPEG Video encoder which has special P4 optimised code.

I would say the Athlon is a much better choice as with the money you save you could buy better software!

I had a problem or two when I had TONS of VST's and effects running, usually only if there were massive reverb and delay settings. I got a FREE plug-in from digitalfishphones.com that set pretty much any problem I had straight. Overall I have experienced very few problems . I had more problems when I had an AMD.

Personally, I prefer Pentium, as they are faster. (the current issue of PC WORLD {U.S. Ver.) Clocked Pent IV vs. Athlon and it beat it in virtually every case.) Though the differences are negligible in most cases. So it is a moot point by and large. Just a matter of preference.

The most exciting news I heard of is Pentium is releasing a 4.7GHZ CPU later this year or early next year. Also AMD is closer to releasing the mysterious HAMMER series of CPU's maybe they will be the one's to put AMD on top. Who knows?
    Regards,
    Manny

Intel is releasing a 3ghz cpu later this year, and maby a 3.2 - 3.4 next spring. Don't raise your hopes too much, as the current motherboards will hardly even support the 3ghz one. (only one or two will)

Intel has a nasty habit of forcing users to upgrade the motherboard at the same time...

Sorry, seemed I exagerated. Intel is planning on releasing the 3.06ghz processor during the first half of next year. They don't have any other plans for workstations

Thanks for the link Manny! This free plugin works beautifully, and is inaudible as far as I can tell. Check out the other plugins too, very impressive.

    Go to: www.digitalfishphones.com

    Cheers people,
    Tim.
