Edit: be careful where you put stuff if it's not being held by the third hand gizmo. Whatever you're touching with the iron gets hot and might leave a burn if it's on a wooden table. Luckily I only melted noddy placemats that nobody wanted.
If you are using one of those helping hands things, be sensible about using eye protection 'cos you will naturally get closer to the hot stuff

Easier to bin a piece of Terry wogan's headgear than getting a new table, IMHO of course.
Edit: Some helping hands have a magnifying glass too - handy as a magnifying glass and a screen between your eye and whatever you're soldering.
