If you've got an amp with two channels that you can footswitch between, there'll be a socket for a switch to go from one channel (set clean) to the other (set dirty).

If not, you'll be wanting a drive pedal of some sort. What kind depends on your budget and what kind of music you want to play, and you can go TOTALLY crazy on different pedals. So I'll weigh in early with my pet favourite and say a Marshall Jackhammer will have a good go at most styles of distortion without breaking the bank.

What kind of music are you doing?
