    Default Pedal Mods.

I've got a DS-1 I'm thinking of modding as i find it sounds terrible for what i want!
It just doesnt seem to have much power, its sounds a bit 'mushy' at times. I've heard the keeley mod's make it sound amazing.

however, I'm looking for a kit type mod as I'm looking at doing the Mod myself, even though I have no experience in this at all really, but thought it might be fun to give it a go.

anyone know of any good ones to make this into a good sounding pedal?

and am i being stupid thinking i could do this myself with no real experience?

Pretty easy if you take your time and have the right tools. The kits are ok value given that you get all the instructions and someone else has worked out what bits to change to what. If you only need the components and already know what to change then it'd be cheaper just to buy those bits.

I've not tried one, but the Monte Allum mods have a good reputation.

so is it just a case of swapping out certain parts for others? or is there some sort of rewiring type thing I'll need to do?

Also, is there anywhere online i could get some instructions and stuff, then just order the parts?

    You'll find a kit here:

That is the kit I've bought. I haven't performed the mod yet, but I've done two of his mods before and they've always been excellent. The kit essentially changes some caps for improved clarity and better tonal balance. His mod also includes a 3-way switch that uses different rectifying diodes, and swaps out an opamp chip. The instructions that come with it are excellent as is the speed of delivery. It works out at about £15 and whilst you could find most of the bits elsewhere, I'd be inclined to save yourself the hassle and order direct.

You can get by ok with the electrics side but I thought that the instructions for the fitting of the switch for the DS-1 plus mod was pretty poor, in fact you never got any for the siting of the switch on the case.

Monte is very good when it comes to customer support and answers e-mails promptly but I thought this was a serious omission. In fairness though he had just produced this mod to the DS-1 so that may have had a bearing.

In terms of skills, if you have a decent soldering iron and have practiced before hand it really isn't too difficult. What amazed me was that I tested after every component, as Monte advises, and the difference was stark from the first item I changed.

    Overall, well worth doing.

Aye, you're correct there! I just fitted mine and whilst I managed to do it perfectly, this is because I've done it twice before. The first time I did it was crap though! Even a picture of it would help!

I think I shall get one of his kits for my BD-2.

Also I think another BYOC Screamer but with completely different diodes from the ones in the current one.

Rectifier diodes or diodes elsewhere in the circuit? Cos if the former, surely a switch can be used to switch between different sets of diodes? I know that cos the DS-1 kit has that function.

How do you like it in the centre/no-diodes position ?
    Red ones are better.
