Your opinion is as valid as mine. It is also true that my opinion is as valid as yours.

    Nonsense.

My opinion is backed up by good science. Yours isn't. You don't even understand the role of diodes in an overdrive or distortion pedal, and you're basing your argument on an irrelevant analogy.

It is also true that your opinion is based on incomplete knowledge. I'll wager that Sporky knows a great deal more about effects pedals than you.

And I would agree with that statement. My knowledge of pedals is plug them in and see if they work, basically very little. The problem that tiny changes like diode swaps is, and I heard it at a Wedding last week, is that when your amp is cookin at 6½ or 7, one guitar sounds very much like another let alone the subtle differences a diode change can/might make to a distortion pedal. At the Wedding, the guitarists pedals, which were likely set for bedroom volumes, sounded dreadful and tinny at venue volumes. Luckily he did 'something' during the interval, probably put the lot into his car, and he sounded great for the second half. And no it was not the drink that affected my hearing, I was driving and thus was 100% dry on the day.

Dude - this is not the same as your experience of component changes because of what a OD circuit is and where the clipping diode is in that circuit : by design it mangles the audio signal - the type, arrangement and number of diodes MASSIVELY affect the resulting signal. This isn't the same as swapping resistors or capacitors for different types (which still is done in pedal modding and does also make a difference but on a scale an order of magnitude less apparent - but the resulting effect can often be pleasing (usually less noise) . This discussion is fundamentally different to the ones about guitar cables, mains cables and deep frozen CDs.
    Red ones are better.

    Ash,

one of the problems I encountered was getting access to the board (and that's another thing that isn't in the instructions). I removed the back cover and tried to prise up the board and make the changes that way but you are better off disconnecting the input and output jacks, the microswitch in the battery cover and you have to undo the LED anyway to replace it and that will get you much better access.

Also make sure you have a decent tip on your' soldering iron and that you wipe it frequently to keep it clean. Oh and buy some more soldering braid as you really don't get enough to remove all the old solder.
