Default All-in-one drum pad type things.

    Can anyone recommend any?

I had a look at the Alesis Control Pad:

But then Ideally i'd be looking for something that could play my own samples without having to be plugged into a laptop all the time (which I'm not sure that can).

I guess really I don't actually need something with full sized drum pads - just a box with buttons that could memorise audio snippets would suffice.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Cheers in advance,
I'm a little lost with this kind of gubbins.

I think you'll be struggling to be honest, with most percussion pads you're stuck with the inbuilt sounds unless you're hooked up to an external sampler or a laptop via MIDI. I personally don't know of any and I was looking for exactly that kind of thing for Sweet Seduction's drummer a couple of years back (we wanted to be able to trigger a couple of silly sound effects that we'd put on the record).

If you do go for an alesis, I think Dolphin or DV had some B-stock ones not long back.

    Thanks for the advice. :]
If only such a device existed!

I'll probably opt for the Alesis - and just hook it up to Reason or somesuch.
(Unless anyone has any other suggestions?)

    Default Roland SPD series

These are going to be the best bet IMO (and they've been around in one for or another since the late 80s)

If you don't need the big pads like the Alesis you pictured and just buttons will do, then the Roland SP-505 or SP-555 would probably do just fine too (at a smaller price).

(I may sound like i work for roland, but i swear i do not!)

The Akai MPC-500 might also be a good solution; it has better buttons than the Roland and can be battery powered for true portability!

Bloody hell, well played! I'd never even seen one of those before, would have been perfect for what we'd wanted to do with one as well...
