If you play live then your new guitar will get nicks and dings natrually. I bought my main guitar new 4 years ago. It fell off a stand at the first gig, the hardware is tarnishing cos of my sweat and as I play lots of 4 band bills in tiny clubs with short changeover times, it gets knocked about by default, no matter how careful I am. I only play 1.5 gigs a month on average and rehearse twice a month so even my limited use still impacts on the guitar.

The relic thing came from Keef Richards I believe who wanted the guitars distressed for a Stones Tour, however it's also an essentially brilliant ploy for Marketing Vintage reissue guitars at Dentists/Doctors and well heeled baby boomers, (who perhaps needed those dings as a badge of honour) at twice their price by utilising the skills of the counterfeiter who could make a Tokai copy look like it came out of Fullerton in the 60's.

I'm sure a large chunk of Vintage Fenders out there are faked. It was popular to update Strats with brass hardware and DiMarzio's in the 70's, plus natrual finishes were popular. But you dont see any guitars like that in Vintage & Rare or on Ebay, so where did they all go?

I appreciate that some of you say that you rub down finishes and the like to make the guitar more playable, but lets be honest. I dont remember seeing those guitars coming up for sale in the classifieds/Loot etc, before the relicing phenomenon. I guess its become more acceptable to do it now.

Not really, would you buy a guitar that some bozo in South Liverpool had relic'd?

That's why none of the ones I have altered will go out for sale.

Now, a "factory" relic gives it legitimacy hence the whole "relic phenomenon".

The altered '70's ones are in the same kinda category, you do see them but they go for peanuts because they are now "vintage" and therefore people want them un-altered. They just get kept, I would bet a lot of those type of guitars are kept forever as they become completely personal to you and of very little value to someone else.

People are strange. On the interweb a lot of you/us seem to forget about things like personal opinion or taste.

I like prs', a lot of you dont.
I generally dislike ibanez', a lot of you dont.
I dont like rhianna, some of you do.

With relics, the ones ive played (all CS fenders) have been set-up beautifully and have consistantly been the lightest, most vibrant (ie, things that I look for personally) fender style guitars ive ever played so thats a big part of why id want one. The other reason is that most of my heroes play vintage instruments (john frusciante, SRV, billy gibbons to name but three) and i love how old fenders look in general. Am i ever going to buy an old one though? No, not unless i win the lottery and even then, id still go out and buy some "new" relics because they play and sound better personally than the two 60s strats ive had the honour of playing....... thats a whole other can of worms though.........

Relics are fakes but an 80s reissue of a 60s guitar is the real deal? I mean, why would you possibly buy a guitar that was made to look like an old guitar???????????????????????????????????????????? POSER!!

Seriously people. Some people like relic guitars, some people don't. Getting upset about it is really, really sad.

*edit* at least a relic mustang would be cheaper, thered only be one year of "reissues" that would have a nitro finish, the other years would have been poly

You seem to forget that without people expressing opposing opinions and tastes, forums would look something like this:

"Hey man, those vintage guitars are really cool aren't they?"
    "yes"
    "yep"
    "uh hu"
    etc

Only some do im afraid, its a tough rite of passage on the fabled interweb that not many survive. The rest turn into zombywoofs or worse, emos.
