    Default How many guitars?

Like most other guitarists my list of "guitars to own" keeps on growing, much to the bemusement of my wife who utters the question on a regular basis, "Why do you need so many guitars?"

At present I am only at 5 (and a ukulele!) but there are a number of different guitars I would love to own - 72 Tele, vintage Strat, ES-335, Jaguar, PRS, old matin acoustic etc etc. But, what would you say are the bare minimum guitars one should own, apart from just acoustic and electric. There are many many guitars on my list, but what is the staple guitar collection?

I currently have two, one 6 string and one 7 string. I don't actually NEED any more than that, means I basically have a back up for if/when i get gigging. If I was in a band that used different tunings then I'd really like 2 guitars for each tuning, main and back up.

I had 11 at one point But lately I've been selling them off, and just keeping the "keepers". Gone are a bass, resonator, elec-acoustic, normal acoustic, cheapo LP's, and others.

Now I've just got 3 elecs that I use regualy (LP, semi-hollow Gretch-a-like, and a tele), plus a DIY tele in bits, and a nylon classical. But I am saving up for a big old future GAS in a few years ..... maybe 335, or a 175, or a LP, or PRS Santana II

Um, hang on...three electrics (four if you count my 'Clarkson Challenge' one that lives at the band studio), five basses (one signed and really, REALLY heavy, so just sits on the wall), two acoustics (but I want a twelve-string also at some point)...so I guess once I've got twelve (TWELVE ) I'll struggle to justify any more.

Doesn't mean I won't get any more, just won't justify them.

I think the list could stop there and be lovely. It's a good list.

I just have 3 so far... my main electric, my electro-acoustic, and my old electric which is now tuned to whatever strange tuning I need for such songs that require it (currently double dropped-D to play an approximation to Goo Goo Dolls' Iris).
