Tone shit? You've not played a good one mate...

    Refer: Angus, Clapton, Allman, Townsend.

Mine's a 1974 walnut-flavoured standard. I don't believe the colour actually makes any difference, except that a paint job can hide any old wood so if you've got a natural finish you're probably getting better wood and therefore better tone. Neither do I believe the colour influences how the axe handles.

The SG shape was based on the Les Paul and was made as an alternative, the early SG's had "Les Paul" on the truss rod covers but I don't think he was very happy about that and asked them to remove it on all further models.

In terms of looks, I find the SG to be pretty much the ugliest guitar ever conceived. I can see why Les Paul asked to have his name removed from the truss rod cover.

    They do sound good though!

I seem to remember it was also used by Mr Townshend to twat someone off the stage at Woodstock, weapon of choice being the SG Special (the real one with P90's and a wraparound bridge). I also had a Gordon Smith SG but got rid as the neck was slightly too narrow so the high E was too close to the edge of the fingerboard. Current stock is an SG Standard, an SG Classic and a Tokai Japanese SG75 (modelled on the '61)

There are SGs and SGs. I think there were 3 or 4 different shapes since the first launch. Some are indeed held to be ugly. I like mine though.
