I have heard from a very good pal who's a 'tonehound' in the extreme that PB's are rubbish. Don't let that put you off though, best to try these things 1st hand and decide for yourself.

I have no experience of these attenywosits things though, LOUD...what, eh? who said that, can't hear you for the ringing in my ears?!!

    Cheers

Thanks for that Hugh. However, at £159 I'll take a punt. It's exactly what I'm after in a few ways so I'd be daft not to try it.

Yes, that's a good price and well worth having a try out of a PB. I'd be interested to hear what you think of it. My pal was also the one who recommended the Mini Mass just to let you know in case the PB isn't much cop.

    Default PB

Yep, HC reviews are pretty useless. But, on earlier PBs there was a problem with a resistor de-soldering itself due to heat buildup in the unit, causing the load on the amp to disappear. This has a similar result to running the amp full on and then pulling the speaker cable out = transformer fries. No load on a valve amp isn't a good thing. This was pretty widely discussed at the time.

The problem has been fixed in the past few years though.

I had mine around '95 - '97 and it worked well with my Marshalls at the time. I had no complaints and it tamed a Superlead no problem. Didn't work with my old Oranges though. My personal opinion is that the HP is a better unit, and I really want to try a Sequis if I can find one.

Yeh I had a Hotplate in the past but I'm struggling to justify the £250 for a unit that I can only use on a specific impedance when the Marshall does exactly what I'm after.

Plus, in reality, am I going to hear a difference between a HP and a PB?! Don't think so. Maybe if I was a tone-hungry fool that is obsessed by stuff like that.

I personally have a Weber Mini Mass. Fantastic piece of kit and all for under £100. Treble boost and bypass switch are nice features on top of the impedance selector.

As you're running a 50W amp, I don't know if you want to go for something like the Weber Mass instead of the Mini Mass to give a little bit of headroom for the attenuator. Also, more features again.

I'd take a look on eBay for them. I had quick tracked delivery for peanuts from a seller on there and avoided the Weber website dispatch times.

Yeh I was planning on the Weber one but the dollar/pound rate made it nearly £200.

Will give the powerbrake a bash and take it from there. After all, it was designed for my amp!

The MASS attenuators are the best I've tried with a variety of stuff, especially given the price, even with the $/£ rate they're still stonkingly good value.

    The best attenuators are speakers
