    Default DSP systems

    Hi there!

Just wondered if there is a possibility for CM to do a round up on DSP Soundcards, like Creamware, UAD etc? Do these cards really offer anything unique&useful now in any terms?

Hope to see a review of Powerpulsar atleast

I'd want to see a review of Powercore Firewire. And in particular, I'd like to know whether the latency's any better than the PCI version.

    Yep.

I'd like to see a bunch of these in FM and what there (independent) benefits are, and what their (potential) use to me would be.

This would be really interesting to see! I'm a bit partisan as I already have 2 UAD-1 cards in perfect harmony, but it would be really nice to see unbiased comparisons, especially with the Powercore, as I just can't make up my mind if I want one or not. Keep hearing horror stories about it's stability and the motorola's bother me, as it infers that no individual plugin on the card can be more powerful than the maximum that will run on one of the DSP's, whereas the UAD has a single unpartitioned chip running at 1 Gigahertz and therefore (presumably) a lot more potential processing power.
Come on CM - let's have a head to head and put me out of my misery

The real sell of the Motorolas is that they're so standard it ought to be possible to get almost anything working on them.

Of course, what I really want is one of these.

Does somebody know about tc powercore and the latency?

    My pc is:

    Pentium 4 3250MHz, 1024MB DDR400, M-Audio Delta1010

If I'll buy a powercore pci, can I use 512 samples/buffer which results a 10ms latency at 48kHz with my delta? I heard that powercore would work fine with buffer sizes from 512 -> 2048 or larger, is this true?. I think that 10ms is still an acceptable latency to play soft synthesizers in realtime, so will the latency be the same 10ms for the powercore synths like Access Virus Powercore plugin or is the real latency twice the original 10ms?

So does somebody know if I can use the powercore pci with good results in my pc system with buffer size of 512 samples and play the Virus plugin almost realtime? How much will the powercore task my computer's cpu, if the buffer settings are like mentioned? I know there's the no latency-mode, but how does it work in normal mode?

I think there's no sense buying the powercore if I cannot get it working with low latency.

I love the creamware range because I've yet to find a card that does the routing, has the level of third party development and range of products that Creamware do.

I think the trick with powercore and latency is that it's determined by the size of the process buffer in your sequencer. It is pretty low latency apparently (don't have one) but more importantly, get a host with PDC. Then you only care about latency for recording purposes.

Incidentally, subsequent to my remark of "almost anything", you'll have noticed that they've got a certain Motorola based synth on their roster.
