Default Nathan Sheppard Guitars - NSG2

This isn't really a cross-posting. Honest. I've posted it here because I look/post in this part of the forum more often than I look in other areas, so I assume that others do too.

    This is currently mine:

It's a complete one-off built by Mr Sheppard, formerly of these parts, which I bought as an investment as much as an instrument to play. It is a beautiful instrument, and a fine example of everything related to woodworkingmanship.

At the end of last year I decided to clear out some guitars, for space reasons and because I don't play some of them enough to feel that I'm justified in keeping them.

My dilemma ... should I keep this one, tucked away in a cupboard labelled "investments (hopefully)", or should I move it on? Should I just dump a couple of lesser instruments (which I also don't play!) and keep this one?

Should I just shut up and go away?

What he is producing at the moment lacks true quality, for which he simply makes excuses. Additionally, from my own contact with him, he lacks integrity, and personally I have doubts as to whether his business is viable in the longer term. If he really has so much work that it is taking him 3 years to make a straightforward guitar from time of order, how come he hasn't got the reputation to go with this kind of waiting time.

There's a few people on here have had a run-in with Nathan in the past and I'm sure they'd like to hear your story.

    Please continue!

[yawn] ... not another knock Nathan thread, please [/yawn]

We all know his weaknesses, and it really disappoints me that he's created such a negative perception. I know, 90% his fault. But he does also make (has made) some beautiful instruments.

    Guess no-one's perfect

They are a pain to restring, but not that hard. Use a flat screwdriver in the top of them to get them to unlock.

I have GuitarGeek's old NSG, and it is a very nice guitar. That said its wiring could have been done better. But it sounds really good.

Im not arguing quality (although yeah, the wiring on mine was a bit of a rush job i think!), just service really.

Anyway, hes got some on "sale" on ebay again so im sure he'll be along shortly to offer them on here too..........

To answer your question 'sell or keep'...The fact he dumps his own product on ebay at significantly lower prices than his 'rrp' is not going to help you sell.

There's no way i'd buy one from him when he will be punting one for half price on the 'bay. The fact that he's now (apparently) resorting to charity tie-ins is surely another indicator. That will necessarily push down used values, and because it's not particularly rare, he has no 'name' users, and it's neither an old classic or a good looking 'odd' design (to most). Used NSG electrics, which would likely have the best / easiest sales potential, will struggle to make £800 in the ebay world - if they sell at all. I would think yours would struggle similarly. In your other thread you suggest you'd like £1500 for it, as a minimum. I think that will be a difficult sell.

That said, it may well be a cracking guitar. Given the resale of his instruments though (after the initial Guitarist hysteria / hype had died down) you'd probably be best keeping hold of it.
