Default Metallica - Downstrokes or Alternate Picking?

Is it true that Hetfield and Hammett actually used alternate picking for their ultra-fast riffs and not strictly downpicking as they claimed to do for years?

I think I read an article in a guitar mag I was browsing, whereby Hammett implied it was sort of a running joke that the two initially put out there and then ran with it.

If this is true, they must be responsible for some absolute monsters who took their words as Gospel!

And a lot of RSI too!

There's no way Battery can be strictly downpicked imo. Other than that I think 90%+ of James' rhythm work is downpicked.

Mick Thomson out of Slipknot and Michael Amott (iirc) out of that metal band are proud downpickers too

I think lead parts are exempt

No way in hell is Battery downpicked, but stuff like Master of Puppets is so much easier to do cleanly by down picking.

on the record the intro of master of puppets sounds like its down picked but when they play it live it sounds like they use alternate picking

they are not all downpicked, depends on the speed, metal militia and hit the lights, stuff like that are obviously not.

master of puppets is. you can hear the difference, downpicked sounds better if the song is slow enough for you to do it.

In the studio, i recall most of it was downpicked (with the leading edge going to everything being d-p'd).

    Live though, that's another matter!

No,.. but there are a lot of studio videos and information out there.

Flemming Rasmussen is also a really nice guy,.. so you can ask him about Metallica stuff.
