Default Bizarre, but perversely funny ("authenticity" related bloggy content)

So, I get a pm from someone on another forum I visit, saying they had listened to my myspace tracks and really liked them. In particular, they liked a track called "I Don't Mind". He said I sounded really good on it, and asked me who had recorded the original because he really liked the song and would like to buy it on CD.

I responded, thanking him for the feedback, and said I was particularly pleased that he liked that track because I had written it, so the recording he'd heard was the original and was available on my CD.

His response? Another "well done" but no interest whatsoever in buying the CD. So, he'd have bought the "original" but not the original. To my mind, there's a few things potentially going on there including any or all of:

    a) He liked the song but didn't actually like my performance, and assumed that someone else doing it (like, say, a dead black person) would be more pleasing to his ears

    b) He didn't like the idea of paying for music from a fellow forum user, because people often post music for free on forums

    c) He figured that if the recording he'd heard was the original he may as well just listen to it on myspace if he ever wants to hear it (it's set as streaming only) - or has used something like realplayer to download the stream (or soundcard playback/recording) so he now already has it

    d) He's not sure he wants to spend money on something that he likes but might not actually be blues-fascist compliant because it's been done by a an english alive white bloke

    e) He could have listened to the sampler track of the other CD tracks and decided that was the only track he liked the sound of....which does make me wonder whether individual track downloads are the way to go.

Not navel gazing about it, but it did prompt a few thoughts on such matters..........

speaking of which, can you remind me how we go about buying your CD again. I know you already said, but I forgot.

Oh, dunno about the answer to your question, but probably all of the above.
None of you seem to understand; I'm not locked in here with you, you'll all locked in here with me.

Indeed. I suppose I'm not really looking for answers, more it threw up some interesting points of consideration for me.

As for the CD... there's two ways - if you want a physical CD then paypal £9.95 to lewis_cohen@hotmail.com. If you want mp3 dowload email £7.00 to the same address and I'll send you a link and password to download a zip file.
