    Default Eric Johnson...

Been looking for some cool alternate picking licks to learn and found myself revisiting some Eric Johnson clips on youtube. I find the guys approach to playing really interesting, and I think the way he uses pentatonics and mixes them up with extra notes sounds great. His technique is really nice, very clean but with a sweetness to it that you don't find in other players. And his tone is wonderul IMO.

Im not keen on some of the Hendrix covers I have heard; sound a bit too note perfect to me and lack spontanaety (sp?)... but his own stuff is superb. As you can probably gather, I rather like him!

Anyone got any albums of his to recommend?

Tones, Ah Via Musicom & Alien Love Child.

    Don't bother with Bloom.

EJ: got to start with AVM.

Holdsworth: good move...guitar will never be the same again...his drummists and bass dudes aren't bad either. The 'Devil Take The Hindmost' solo is truly awesome (2'54 in your vid)

AVM is definitely the place to start. After that, check out Tones and Venus Isle. I've not heard Bloom yet.

I first discovered Eric about 15 years ago when I was buying my first instructional video. I was all set to buy Buddy Guy's video until the guy in the guitar shop told me it was absolutely shite and instead recommended EJ's first Hot Licks video.

I was curious as to what exactly the geeky looking guy on the cover had to teach me. Little did I know!
