it depends on the guitar. the higher quality of the rest of the guitar ( top, sides, back, neck, tuners, design, etc. ) , the more the details have a chance of effecting tone.

and of course, tone is subjective. one man's trash .....

    Fitted my Horny Pins.

There is a subtl but noticable difference to the plastic ones.

The tone has more attack, more zing and more sustain. Some of the slightly boomy bottom end seems to have gone too.
I would take a great song with Bad tone over Great tones in a shitty song anyday.

    These people speak much sense!

I first bought 'Boxwood' pins to replace the battered old plastic pins on my J45 acoustic to hopefully help keep it in tune better, and after reading the positive sound enhancement promises on the packet, I personally didn't find it made any difference in sound on my guitar, or improve the staying-in-tune bit...

Next I tried those Planet waves black ebony pins to possibly give my acoustic more attack and brightness, but once again they didn't appear to change anything regarding the sound my acoustic produced, and on an asthetic level they looked horrible being black against the light coloured wood of the bridge.

It was only after having a bone saddle proffesionally fitted that I really noticed anything changing, but then this was only a very slight change, but it did make my guitar sound a touch clearer and the projection seemed to improve. I had some bone pins at the same time but didn't like the coldness of them when my hand was resting on them, plus they were a different shade to the saddle so I popped the original plastic ones back in, nothing changed regarding the sound differences when I did this...

So my conclusion was that a saddle will change things more so than just pins, but even that was slight, and it's hard to compare if you fit a new set of strings as it's going to sound better regardless for a while.

Do what makes you happy, only you can say if it's better, and as you said it's only a cheap change, but if you *want* to really change your sound, a bone sadlle IMHO is the way to go.
