I've just bought one off Ebay for my mate's mrs for his birthday present: first time I've tried one out - an amazing sound-shaping tool. Might be interesting to build a clone and A-B them...I've got a really good tech/service engineer who looks after my gear when required. Thought I'd get him to build me a Lovetone Brown Source as I don't always want to take mine to gigs - he reckoned he'd got close (some parts on the original had the values scratched out), but it didn't sound anything like as sweet: I've found the same with a lot of 'clone' pedals - they get close, but not as good.

Do I take it with the FF there's no secrecy re components/design?
You can get them almost exactly like the original. The only difference will be the ratings of your transistors, but apart from that, the pedal will be made of exactly the same components so it'll sound the same.

If it for personal use/experementation/enjoyment then there's no reason to be cautious. You CANNOT copyright a schematic so you're free to replicate. Obviously calling it by it's traded name and trying to pass it off (sell it) using the registered name will land you in bother.

On a related note, I've moved my FF off my board and replaced it with a ZVex 'Mastotron'. It's too easy to kill somebody when using the FF in a live situation and I'm scared of it

When I built mine I removed the stab control as it's completely useless for the above reason.

I undersatnd Mr Vex is somewhat vexed by people cloning his pedals - imitation is surely the sincerest form of flattery?

That's my point re building your own - fine for a bit of fun and definitely good if you're on a budget and have some spare time- not to mention the satisfaction of doing it yourself - but IMHO there's a reason certain pedals achieve their reputation - they sound really good (or bad). I guess I'd rather buy a real one 2nd hand cos if I don't like it, or decided I no longer need it, I get my money back when I resell: kinda like extended hire? The Brown Source clone just didn't come close: tonally it lacked the warmth and roundness, the analogueness of the original, which is precisely why I keep using it, and presumably why they fetch so much secondhand. That's not to say I'm not going to attempt building something: it appeals, and your blog has inspired me to try.

I've been playing around in the studio with the one purchased for my mate's birthday and it is really insane: not for live use without a net?! I'm using it with keyboards/synths and it's really really good. Do you want to part with yours?

There are done-to-death 'issues' with cloning commercially available pedals. Also, I think ZV might take exception to Kevin imploring folks to build their own rather than purchasing the real thing

No...it's a keeper...sounds great! You certainly need to kill the volume when adjusting it...you're only five degrees away from a burst eardrum at all times
I'm slightly surprised that it's truly happy with the input level from a synth...you might like the 'Mastotron' as a. it's cheaper and b. it's got adjustable input impedance.

    Sorry to jump in...

Been thinking of building a FF for a while, does anyone know where I might find a schematic or circuit diagram?

Ben using a little big muff, which sounds great but I need something a bit more mental!

Wish I knew how to read that haha. I'd love to make one myself.
    That's completely wrong.

    Do not build it.
