    Me too - you got a really good deal there, Sonic mayhem ensues...

    Not sure how 'happy' the FF was with synth inputs: it tended to make all the same crazed noises that it did with a guitar and a bass. I tend to use guitar effects on most keyboard parts - they never seem to mind...

    Would love to hear it if you have some decent examples.

    I only mentioned the 'happiness' thing as the FF most often likes to receive the signal first in the signal chain, i.e. guitar > cable > FF > more pedals > amp. It's known for not liking the buffers of other preceding pedals and responds differently when you reduce the guitar volume...a mysterious phenomenon if there ever was one. There is no better or worse with the FF...only differing levels of mentalisticness.

    The problem with just building clones is that very often it doesn't result in any greater understanding beyond "making R11 bigger adds treble". Nowt wrong starting there - and, in fact, nowt wrong staying there, but it just doesn't seem that interesting to me. A bit like taking up woodcarving and then making nothing but spoons, all to the same design out of a magazine.

    But a spoon with a super bright purple led would be frickin awesome

    Thanks for the links though, will definately check them out. I guess it's more about the confidence building really but would be cool to make something that I could say is my own design.

    If you put together something like a Distortion+ or a TS on a breadboard you can experiment with changing values and so on. Working from the schematic, though, along with a guide (such as the Geo articles) means you can develop an understanding of why these changes happen and lets you plan things.

    that's where I'm up to now. I found the Technology of the fuzz Face and Technology of the Tubescreamer articles to be brilliant for helping me to understand the "why" and by taking those principles to the breadboard you can assure yourself what you do and don't understand.

    Actually being able to read and interpret a schematic also means you can spot mistakes more easily, and pinch basic ideas from other schematics (eg re-use the voice control from a Zendrive elsewhere, splice in a better tone control to a basic OD etc etc)

    There's a good article on beavis audio about turning schematics in to circuit layouts, as well as a bunch of schematics with corresponding breadboard layouts so you can practice going from the schematic to the practical layout and be sure you understand it. Everything gets easier from that point (which is basically the point I've got to)
    Red ones are better.

    I've literally had the pedal for 24 hours - my mate's getting it as his birthday pressie from his lovely wife on Thursday - I may not have time to record anything before then, though I am on the lookout for an FF of my own.

    Not sure that any of the results I've been getting so far can be termed 'decent': precisely why I like that pedal

    Will try and get something down for you in due course...

    For keyboard and synths you might want to keep an eye on Ebay for the Alesis ModFX units - particularly the Bitrman if you like mangling sounds.
