Am I right in thinking that with Apple's current MacBook Pro aluminium chassis design, that upgrading the memory oneself will NOT void the warranty? Given that Apple are asking £800 to go from 4Gb to 8Gb on their 15inch 2.8GHz model, it seems sensible to pay less to DIY.
I've read conflicting opinions on this warranty issue.
I suspect 4Gb of memory will be enough for handling up to 8 tracks of simultaneous audio recording with playback and plugins. However it's things like video editing, audio/visual work and graphic design where the extra memory could be useful.

Nothing wrong with going third party for memory. Should be no warranty issues, memory and hard drives are considered user upgradable even on the laptops.
+1 to not worrying about compatibility - all the MacBooks I've seen use Samsung memory modules identical to the ones which come with Lenovos. Apple might tell you there are quality issues etc and might bitch/moan if you take it in for repair, at which point you should probably just keep the old memory modules and replace them if you ever do sent it in to them.

I'd certainly keep the original sticks as back-up.
