    Default internet security

what's the best internet security program for a DAW? i've used norton in the past but found it too resource hungry. i currently don't have anything loaded but i'm finding i have to go online more and more for software updates. bitdefender looks interesting as it has a games mode which allows all the background resource hungry stuff to be switched off.

    anyone use bitdefender?

My PCs are protected by a hardware firewall and then for AV they use AVG.

McAffee and Norton are resource hogs. Work uses McAffee & HIPS and they are a pain, totally slug whatever they're running on.

For my setup I also use hardware firewall / router locked down, and if you do use wireless turn on MAC Address registration and the strongest encryption/authentication you can.

I use Clamwin AV and Spyware Doctor, and Firefox with NoScript.

vst plugins and multiple tracks require maximum performance from a PC. products like norton and mcafee eat huge amounts of system resource and run background processes that interfere with audio recording. its a issue for gamers as well. i currently don't have any protection other than my router firewall but they are easy to get through. most of the time my music pc is not connected to the internet.

To be honest, I doubt that the vsts etc require that much more performance from my laptop than the applications that I use. But then, my laptop is very OTT (quad core CPU, 0.5 TB RAID 0 array, 16GB RAM etc).

If your router has a proper firewall in it rather than just NAT - then it won't be easy to get through, it will be just viruses etc that you need to watch for.

I opted to have two OS on my PC, one for Internet access and general daily PC activity and the other solely for music application without internet connection etc. The internet is simply deactivated on the music system so I can access the web if i need to authorise new applications etc; however this is for a very limited period of time and largely based on the assumption that the websites being used will be trusted, official software develolpers etc and unlikely to be riddled with virus threats. The drawback is that i have to switch OS depending on what i want to do, for example I can't write music whilst chatting to peeps on here . ON the plus side though I dont have any process zapping antivirus eating into my music production which was the whole point for me. Hope this helps.

I fly in the face of convention and have my one PC doing everything. I use Avast as my AV and Comodo as my firewall. I've not had a virus or issue in years. I also don't click on any old shit when I don't know what it is.

You could just disconnect from the net when you don't need to be connected to it and disable the security stuff.
