I opted to have two OS on my PC, one for Internet access and general daily PC activity and the other solely for music application without internet connection etc. The internet is simply deactivated on the music system so I can access the web if i need to authorise new applications etc; however this is for a very limited period of time and largely based on the assumption that the websites being used will be trusted, official software develolpers etc and unlikely to be riddled with virus threats. The drawback is that i have to switch OS depending on what i want to do, for example I can't write music whilst chatting to peeps on here . ON the plus side though I dont have any process zapping antivirus eating into my music production which was the whole point for me. Hope this helps.

That's pretty much the same here. I have a 500 gig SATA drive split into two partitions. The one I'm on now runs Vista 64 Ultimate with most enhancements on. I use it for internet (obviously) word processing, art stuff, CD/DVD burning etc etc. The other partition runs XP, cut to the bone and optimized for DAW operation, apart from Wallpaper cos I don't like being greeted by a blank screen. I also have two more SATA drives for audio and back up.

Even though I can switch from one t'tother in under 2 minutes I still find it a pain in the butt. I'm planning on building a new I7 monster with an obscene amount of power and resources some time next year so I'll prolly go back to one system for everything.

You could just disconnect from the net when you don't need to be connected to it and disable the security stuff.

To be honest I don't even bother.

I leave all the crap running, use my machine to play COD online, have IE open, and run Cubase and still haven't maxed my CPU out yet.

I'll worry about it when it happens. Then buy a more powerful CPU

I knew it. I remember when i used to run everything of one user, my PC was cack tho so maxed out really easy, infact my old sempron machine could barely run 6 tracks in logic before fallin over, it was really sh*t. Aside of that tho I found i never got any music writ cos i was too busy chattin, surfin etc on line, so havin the seperate drives works really well for me.

Yeah well to be honest I can sense a bit of slowdown and then there's the issue of potentially losing project files to a PC issue. It's not happened yet touch wood! I can't really justify spending at least £500 on a dedicated DAW PC and can't be arsed dual booting just incase I wanted to check the net when in DAW mode.

Anyway the current project (the Faithless one) seems to run fine and that's about 27 audio and midi tracks currently, a lot of them with some CPU intensive effects on.

i use AVAST - free and light - tbh i dont even bother witching it off when working on any music pc I own with it on - i use that in conjunction with spybot s&d - again free which stops page hijacks

never had a problem in years - all i have to do is get a new free registration code every 12 months from AVAST when it expires

others use AVG - free and also good

Another vote for Avast. Light on resources, works great, and free. Just remember to turn the annoying sounds off.
