Yeah, but loads of guitar builders manage that without making such a monstrosity.

Both nice looking instruments, but how come if "It's a complete 1-off - he never made anything else remotely like it", that the one in the advert, which is a different guitar, seems to be the exact same model, apart from the bridge?

It's only the big heavily flamed pic, all the otheres seem like the one above.

But you're right of course !

You know, I'd never looked that closely at the grain patterns of the photos compared to the actual guitar, and had believed what I'd been told ... that Nathan made this one as a 1-off for himself rather than as something to sell.

The multi-shot PR pic is the same guitar, no question. The single shot PR pic with the blurb may be a different guitar ... should I ever manage to contact Mr Sheppard, I'll ask him!

Why do I say "may be" rather than definitely is?

The bridge is different, but I'd assumed that is was just a mod - there's nothing to say that the photo'd guitar was finished (or even playable) - knowing Nathan it was quite possibly just a mock-up for the photo shoot. So I don't think that a different bridge is definitive. But I don't think that even he'd go as far as replacing the top, so that would be definitive.

On first sight, I had put the different appearance down to studio lighting and pre-photography preparation (or post-photography manipulation) to enhance the looks of the guitar. It is a difficult guitar to photograph accurately - because of the flaming, much depends on the lighting and angle of shot. When I look at mine in the flesh, it looks different to the outdoors photos - the grain is much more apparent in real life - but it's very obviously the same guitar as in the multi-shot PR piece.

On second sight, I think that they're different tops, though probably cut from the same piece of stock.

So is there another NSG out there somewhere ... or is lighting and photoshop really that powerful?

    Yes and no.
Certainly you can "bring out" the grain and flame with decent photography skills or pretty basic photoshop ones (see attached - 2 mins with a curves/levels adjustment layer). The basic timber grain is still the same and I think that looks like a different piece of wood. However, as you say, the angle you view it at can change these AAAAA+ killer tops quite remarkably. I seem to remember Neil Morgan investing quite a bit of time and effort in developing his photography skills (using a home made "light tent") so that he could get decent shots of his instruments.

It is the most shattering experience of a young man's life, when one morning he awakes, and quite reasonably says to himself: "I will never play the Dane"

Next time that I want to put a guitar pic up on here, I'll send it to you for 2mins Photoshopping first!

The amended pic looks so much better - and actually a closer representation of the actual guitar - than my original pic. My original one looks flat and washed out - which isn't how the guitar really is.
