Hey all, Im having a little bit of trouble building up my speed/power on my weak arm (left). Im good on my strong arm (right) and can get some decent speed but the problem is when i try doubles or something similiar, it always seems that my left hand is holding me back and it feels less controled than my right
So if you guys could please help me with some exercises or tips to develop my lefty it would be much appreciated :P
practice pad and practice. simple as that. do it ALL the time, like when you are watching TV, sitting in traffic or waiting for a bus or whatever. THe only way its gonna happen is by building up the muscles in the left side, I assume you are right handed? If so, its why your right hand is better, obviously.
You need to get used to doing stuff with your left.
Focus on snare drum and rudiments for a good bit of your practice routine. By removing all the motion of traveling around the kit you can really watch your technique and see what your left hand is doing differently than your right, then work to make it the same.
Also, try starting your exercises/patterns/whatever you play with your left hand. If you start everything with your right, that puts your weak hand on the weak subdivisons, keeping it weak! By putting your weak hand on the strong subdivisions, you'll be better able to focus on what it's doing.
Remember to cut yourself some slack, too. Most drummers will tell you that they aren't as good with their left hand. The ones who don't, are left handed! I'm ambedextrous and I still have to spend a lot of time working on hand evenness. It's just part of being human!
