Question Heavy metal/Hard Rock drum programming.

Hello, does anyone out there know how to programme or know where I can get drum machine style charts for hard rock and heavy metal drum programming? I'm looking for stuff similar to Linkin Park, POD, and Bullet For My Valentine.

I'd be very gratefull for any help received.

I go for something along the lines of BFD kinda thing. It's horrendously difficult to program by hand, realistic drum parts because of all the tiny discrepancies that are incorporated. At worst I'd look into a large library of sampled session drummers and Recycle.

You should be able to get drum tabs by googling it, but that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to actually making them sound authentic.

Drumkit from hell or eZ drummer with the drumkit from hell expansion (cheaper, this second one is what I have) is great for this kind of thing. The samples were recorded by the drummer from meshuggah I beleive, you can also hre it used on Devin Townsend's Ziltoid album.

I ought to get round to purchasing Superior Drummer 2.0 at some point. I like my NS Kit samples (cheap and EXCELLENT samples - the kicks aren't great for teh metalz but overall there's something for everyone with NS Kit)

    Drum Programming's super fun!

Both EZ Drummer and Superior Drummer come with midi files which you can drag and drop, from Toontrack you can also purchase midi packs .... i personally hate the sound of Drum kit from hell, but the midi patterns are pretty good for metal...

.... ez drummer and superior drummer both sound fantastic by the way... if you got the cash and you know what you'#re doing as far as production i'd go with superior tho....

its worth putting the time in to learn how to do this. step one is to turn off the snap to grid, step two is to model how others do it and learn the patterns. you can do this by putting drum loops into your DAW, lining up the cursor and putting in the beats in midi. then look at the wav and see which hits are hit louder etc.
it took me 3 to 4 years of frustration and buggering about but now i can do it.
i've had people ask me repeately who plays the drums for my band; its mister mouse.

metal drums in a 4/4 rythm (like most western music) have a snare on the 2nd and 3rd beat. they are typically at about 65bpm. if there is a hat on the 3rd then you can delay the snare by a 1/4 of a 1/4 beat. every other alternate 1/4 beat is of higher velocity than the rest. drum rolls are generally played with the kick drum, starting quiter and getting louder as they go. they are usuallu reserved for the last 1/4 of a bar wherein almost anything goes. cymbol crashes are useful for upping the noise quotient and are usually just walloped on every beat. Using the correct samples is very important for aquiring that metal sound. you can't do it with jazz drum samples for example lol.
