Mark IV is simply one of the Grail amps.

You've got your Plexi's, your JCM800s, your Twins, and your Marks.

It's one of YOUR grail amps maybe. I don't need that much gain and I like that I can switch my Express down to 5w and use it in the house.

Is there anything negative about the 5:50 that leads you to say go for the MarkIV in place of it, or is it just regarded a better amp historically?

Some great bands imho! Big Ramones fan here! They used JCM800's didn't they? Anyway ............my 2cents is that I have heard/read (but not personally) that 5:50's are a bit noisy - maybe someone can shoot that rumour down? I agree that MKIV is a classic amp (I've had 2) but VERY focused/directional amps I found but great clean and solo sounds. I never got a crunch that I liked. Not to say its not in there.

If I had a grand to spend on a Mesa I'd be tempted by a Maverick, but I love the EL84 sound... mind you, I'm surprised that Bigdawg's Express hasn't gone at that price

I have a Mesa Maverick 1x12 in lovely cream finish... truly excellent amps. Mine's been temporarily retired by a Marshall JMP 50watt MV, that formerly belonged to three other notorious Scottish forumites, Shugz, Nocaster and Upsetter. They've all told me it's a great little combo, but all three still let it go... it's nice being near such hardened GAS addicts! LOL

It is a fab combo and with a pair of Century Vintage speakers fitted, I can even lift it. Its thick bottom end and lack of middle certainly seems to suit my current band(s) better than the sweeter, more middle-ly tones of the Maverick.

Marshall or Mesa... man, I'm loving having the choice!

Oh yeah... and if I have the Century vintage in the Maverick, I can carry it with one hand. Even with a Celestion G12H-90 it's not too heavy.

And I don't want to upset lamf37, but the Mesa has been described as being like a massively souped up AC30 (despite sharing EL84/Class A architecture, I don't think it is really!)
