Default Why do new drummers get really fussed about the make?

It really bugs me, all these kids wanting a Yamaha or Pearl drum kit.

I love my drum set-up, and it's a complete mis-match of different makes, some unbranded - some home-made! The brand is irrelevant in my opinion, only the sound.

    I guess it's a typical guy thing

    I dunno, to be consistant?

All i can say is, 99.9% of drummers go for a complete kit and not a mis-match of items perhaps found in a skip. You are in the minority my friend.

As for the "kids" wanting something, well if they have dreamt about it for years, saved up their pocket money, whos to say they shouldnt have a yamaha kit?

The brand is irelevant, you are right. All about the sound. Luckily, Tama make something that suits my sound, and its not a mis match of stuff.

i dont know etiher, i got my first drum kit last year and went for a gear4music electronic drum set, with other stuff, and its great. I dont know why kits want pearl kist etc, but i think im an exception

I assume you said - "why kids want Pearl kits"

Its not rocket science, Im not even sure why this thread exists. Pearl kits are cost effective, have very good endorsees and get used all over the world, by many major artists, and amateurs alike.
    So.....no wonder kids want them.

Let me put it to you like this, Which would you buy -

option A - Ferrari F430, complete from the dealer.

Option B - Ferrari F430, complete with tyres from Skoda, Brakes from Toyota, no steering wheel, whichever random engine found on ebay etc. etc.

See my point? I know which I would prefer. Given the above quotes, its clear which you guys prefer Sadly, Im gonna be going faster than you

Its a snob thing. The best gear is normally items you pick up out the local paper for next to nothing. Its down to who plays the kit at the end of the day and how well the kit is tuned and its construction i have seen drummers with a fantastic looking JW kit and when the band started and the drummer kicked in i have had to walk out. Expensive cymbals that sound like gongs hanging in a japanease water garden..

For me, pride in your gear is part of being a musician. You don't need the most expensive kit in the world, but getting a proper set and maintaining it/ cleaning it and learning how to tune and play it is the most fun!

Oddly enough, I know plenty of guitar players with the same attitude of "sod it, it's cheap and mismatched" and every last one of them sound god awful

I inherited my first kit from the exiting drummer; is was a Beverley kit with a Red Sparkle finish. Within two months I PX'd it an bought a Premier kit. I was influenced by drummers of the time who were playing either Premier or Ludwig kits, and I couldn't afford Ludwig.
“Jazz, isn’t that just a series of mistakes disguised as musical composition?”

What's a JW kit? I cannot take your view point seriously on that basis....
