    Default midi question

    question:

how do i "tell" ( in case of using pitch bend) how much time the pitch takes to change from a given value to another using portamento change and portamento time ( midi messages?)

that is to say, the value of portamento time can be set from 0 to 127 , but how can i say to a given synth that this time is ( for instance) 7 seconds? how does it translate into MIDI value?

I don't know.. - but.. - if you want to control pitch during a given period of time you can use pitch bend.. you will probalby know that pitchbend has better resolution than ordinary midi messages..

what you could do in for instance a sequencer, is to draw pitchbend-data using a line-tool (that would ensure a smooth regular rise or decrease) from one point in your project to the other..

more on what you're actually asking.. I suggest you use the sequencer to measure what you want to know.. although I'm not sure it will work.. you see - even if you can send a portamento-time message to a synth - I recon the way synthesizers respond to that message will be individual - i.e. they will respond differently.. simply because the messages are recognized as MIDI-data and not specific time-data... my guess is that you will encounter different results depending on what instrument you're adressing.
