Default Values of items for sale

I've seen a few threads recently where a person has offered something for sale only to be set upon by members telling them it is too expensive.

Could we perhaps have a protocol whereby such opinions are expressed in a PM and not on the thread. I appreciate there are people here who try to jump in first and snaffle a bargain only to pass it on for a profit later, thats fine. But when an asking price is ridiculed and the item torn apart, that is uncomfortable to watch and in my eyes, not acceptable.

Yes, let those with greater knowledge give advice, but don't spoil a sale.

I dont see where your coming from, nothing wrong with Haggling or expressing an honest opinion as to the value of an item put up for sale. He who dares and all that, are you sure your not reading too much into this.? I wouldnt like to see posts continually reading

other sites I've been on require the deal to be done in the thread and only move to PM once price agreed. Prices can be questioned if backed up with a suitable source e.g. retail, the bay , other sales etc. This would act as a reality check on some of the over priced items without being ridiculed.

I guess it depends what type of site people want this to be. If somebody is asking for a price that is way over the odds, I don't think there is anything wrong with pointing that out...community spirit and all that, but it would be nice to think that if somebody is asking a ridiculously low price - they might just get an arm around their shoulders and a pointer in the right direction.

Saying that, it comes down to what people are willing to pay, and if the buyer doesn't do their research - and ebay, for one is easy enough to get some idea from for most things - it is up to them. And if the seller is asking an inflated price, that is their call too, along with whatever the consequences are.

Lets face it though, you tend to see the ones that are milking every penny easily enough.

That's happened to me, and it's one of the nice things about this place.

Well, yes - I've had someone wanting £10 knocked off the price of a guitar

Now, where can I get a Marshall for £900?

surely people can ask opinions as to the value of something before they declare they have one to sell. Lets not forget about the buyer also.we will be asking for receipts and proof of ownership next, what about all the cheap Hooky Gear out there?

I have to agree, its really bad form to question the asking price publicly, especially if you have no serious intention of buying the item on sale once your offer is rejected, as the case often seems to be. Fair enough if someone, like our 5w boutique amp building friend peroja, is trying to pull a fast one then people need to be made aware that the goods on sale aren't what they're made out to be. But, if the sale is above board then the seller should be afforded a certain degree of respect and should be entitled to receive and accept/reject offers privately and not subjected to matters of personal opinion (i.e. thats too pricey for me mate etc, etc...) regarding price on the forum itself.

I am quite sure some sellers have gone in with an exaggerated price expecting a slight knock down ( Haggle) and not had to adjust their asking price, in effect making more than they expected. swings and roundabouts, everyone of us is up for ridicule every time we post imo just depends what mood the forumites are in.

I actually think it should be encouraged. This is a community, not a classifieds site - a lot of the people on here are friends, from the veterans to the inexperienced, and nobody wants to see anyone else taken for a mug by somebody selling them on a ridiculously high price. Essentially, it keeps people honest.

That said, criticisms of price should really be done in a "you really need to consider dropping the price, otherwise it's not going to sell" fashion rather than "you're having a laugh, mate". Unless, of course, it's a really obvious attempt at deception.
