I don't see the problem as long as it's done in an appropriate fashion.

If someone is asking too much, they don't stand much chance of getting a sale, so it's right that a friendly pointer in the right direction is issued. I know I would appreciate this if someone did it to me.

If someone is blatantly trying to mislead others by attempting to sell at an inflated price - anyone got a boutique tubeamp (sic) they'd like to sell me? - then it's also right that they're shot down in flames in order to protect the community's less well informed members from a potential mistake.

As said above, this is a community. If someone doesn't like the way the community works, then there are others they can join.

it is a classified section. I do believe more harm can be done by pm than out in the open. imo pm should be for private details etc.

I think this forum works really well. I have only ever had really pleasant experiences with people I've done deals with here. Good forums/communities like this are self-cleansing....people who take the piss either as sellers or buyers are easily spotted and sorted out by the community.

I'm active over at HCFX and there is a rule that says that you shouldn't question people's prices. Personally it works well there as it's kept the Spam threads very tidy. A person has the right to charge what they want for an item.

As we saw recently, the 'boutique tubeamp' thread did get jumped upon but not because of the price first and foremost. It was jumped on because of false claims made by the seller. That isn't criticising someone's price. It is criticising someone's honesty and questioning fraudulent behaviour. That was entirely right to do in my opinion.

If I put something up for sale and people want to say that it's too expensive, tough shit. That's my right. If it sells at that price, then good for me. If it doesn't and I have to drop the price, so be it.

I agree, if you think the price is too high then don't buy it, commenting on sale prices in public threads is not very polite.

I don't dip into the classifieds all that often but over the last 18 months I have seen some very intelligent challenges to some of the 'dodgier' adds - for example, showing that the same guitar was for sale elsewhere by a different seller and thus the poster was trying to pull a fast one and lay claim to an instrument he didn't even own!

if someone says that the poster is over charging then that's just an opinion; anyone generally interested in buying it will form their own opinion and is at liberty to do their own research.

Having just sold something to a forumite by means of PM's I would have had no objection at any point if he had posted a thread saying ' is this a good price for this guitar' or ' eric just offered me this, anyone got one cheaper?' Its an anonymous internet forum, why would i take offence?

In short , its a forum - the clue was there all along in the web adress.

Most of the people who point this out are correct, if it was just a case of poeple jumping in with a summary attempt at devaluing the item then I might be more concerned but I don't think that's the case at all.

Yep, I've witnessed a thread in which quite amicable negotiation was going on between a seller and a potential buyer but another person got involved suggesting the buyer should look elsewhere as the item was overpriced.

I have no problem in principle with pricing being discussed in public and in this instance the negotiation was all aboveboard and public, but the attempt of the third person in dissuading the buyer from that particular item was perhaps not done in the most polite or helpful manner.

The thing that has pissed me off especially the Boutique Amp Thread is that it gets quite a few posts everyday and is constantly at the top of the Classifieds which in turn bumps the genuine sellers (me) down the list!!!

EDIT - oh shit, I've just done it to myself by replying to this!!!, also, shouldn't this be in off-topic or something?

But the boutique amp thread is thread of the year so far!
I listen to bands that don't even exist yet.
