Hadn't noticed that .. saw the "1080p processor" bit and assumed the whole thing would be 1080p.

Am currently watching fillums on a 24" screen that's 1920x1200 so getting bigger with lower res would surely look worse yes? The backlight on my monitor bleeds through a touch on the blacks... would probably be a great inprovement on this yes?

Depends how close you are. Higher res means you can be closer for a given screen size before you see pixelation. Or is it pixelisation. I forget.

Well, one of the advantages of plasma is that it's emissive, so no back light, so no bleed-thru.

When I bought my plasma I had a good long look at the 42 (which was 1024x768) side-by-side with the 46 (which was 1920x1080) and to be honest it was hard to spot any difference (other than sheer size) at normal viewing distances with either HD or SD content. I think you'd have to be closer than is comfortable (for telly) for it to matter.

1080 came about as part of a THX standard. The idea was to find the resolution at which you (assuming normal visual acuity) could sit close enough for a 30-degree field-of-view without seeing pixelisation. Turns out that needs (at 16:9 resolution) about a 2k horizontal resolution. However, most people don't want to watch Eastenders with it filling that much of their vision - it's fine for films, but for telly it's overbearing - so they knocked it down a touch (for quite complex reasons including estimated bandwidth) and came up with 1080p. Which also happened to be a reasonably neat multiple (2 1/4) of 480i, the prevailing US standard of the time (this wasn't a coinkydink).

Anyways. Given that most people sit more than 1/4 the screen height away from the screen, 1080 is wasted on most people. For most UK households living rooms, 720 is indistinguishable from 1080, and XGA is pretty hard to tell from 720.

Yep, I agree with everything Sporky is saying. I ended up with a LG plasma non 1080p. There was full HD screens around in my budget but this one looked great not just when the telly was on.

It accepts a full hd signal but doesn't have the resolution. Viewing distance is over 10feet so I figured that it wasn't necessary. I've yet to see a TV with obviously better picture quality than mine for SD or HD.

Image retention is a bit scary at times but has always gone quickly in the 18months that i've had it. Also I do get a bit of judder in blu-ray panarama panning shots but it is hardly noticeable.

IMO plasma is by far the better picture.

FWIW, my dad's (albeit much older) Panasonic plasma doesn't look as good as my mum's Bravia LCD.

The Sony has much more vivid colours and warmth where the Pana is more grainy and sometimes the colours run into eachother and you get these patches, But I haven't managed to get the correct balance of backlight/black levels yet on the LCD,

and dont forget berts law......................... which basically means, I like to sit so far away from the thing, (think makers optimum distance + 40%) it makes no difference cos they all look good
