If you used the wood and anchored it into the ground it would have been done by now and cheaper

A greenhouse is a waste of time. If you want a good crop, you need the spare room and some High Pressure Sodium lamps.

well, at least it'll be good exercise. The biggest amount of manual mixing I've done was when we screeded our kitchen floor: 7' by 10' by 2" deep, over two days. That was... hardwork.
None of you seem to understand; I'm not locked in here with you, you'll all locked in here with me.

Oh I'm not looking forward to it... I'm worrying I'll somehow manage to make concrete slope uphill or something

Here's what it looks like after digging the trench and putting hardcore in...

    Note the little kiddies spade.

    (No... I didn't use that entirely... )

    Looks good

Get the concrete in before it rains or you'll create a new breed of swearword

Just use the edge of a bit of wood to pat the concrete down and it should level up fine. And make sure you pour it all in before any of it goes off. I'd suggest going to a store and buying a mixing tray :-

Or even a wheelbarrow. Mixing concrete in a bucket will get very old very quickly.

Now, if only I'd read your post before going out there....

I've managed to mix up 2 bags of ballast with 1/3 of cement in buckets, mixed it all together and got it in the trench.

I'm now fit for f**k all.

I'm doing this in the blazing sun and I'm knackered beyond belief. There will be no more mixing in buckets from now on.... it will be one bag of ballast, on a sheet of plastic, at a time.

Frankly, I don't care if it slopes like the side of Everest right now... I wish I'd stuck with the other plan of just slapping the sodding thing directly onto the grass and bollocks to it leaning over !

Yep, I used to do this all day every day and it still knackered me out, when I was 33!

That's four of the six bags mixed and in.... I wasn't build for this shit... !

...or rather, I am a fairly large framed bloke, but I'm a computer engineer FFS ! and the heaviest work I have to do is carry my amp into the car !

Tell me... how do you stop the earth on the trench sides from crumbling into the concrete ?
It's been a day or so since I dug the trench so the earth is a bit dry.

That last bit is yer problem. Dig, then pour.

Your best bet now is to get the concrete in asap with a fairly wet mixture. I has concerned that you're typing while still pouring though

If it helps, the foundations on my extension were 7 feet deep, 4 feet wide and about 35 feet long in total. We had to pour by hand (from a truck admittedly) using wheelbarrows as there was no pump access. 6 blokes, 3 hours, two trucks, 6 KNACKERED blokes.

Well, it's in. I had to do it in three stages - one half, then the other, then a final layer over the lot. I couldn't do it any other way as I couldn't mix it fast enough. The first layer had set slightly by the time I got round to the final layer, but as I say - that's all I could do. It's level-ish, but it will be ok I'm sure.

How long do I have to wait before I can start laying the blocks on it ?
