when questioned, you just threw it at him out of panic.

Funnily enough, having trained in aikido a while back, I think my jo staff is still at my parents...

I'm pretty sure that asking the question in this thread would invalidate any possible "it was just lying around" defense...

But don't go with long stick like items - if you catch the baddie in a corridor you may have no room for swinging it... unless... you take up clay pigeon shooting - shotgun beats four aces

And might require a fair bit of justification as to why it's not sitting snug in a locked cabinet at three in the morning

We have a high-powered air rifle here, but it's not exactly the easiest weapon to handle and certainly too slow.

Found a hockey stick in the garage which will do for now.

I used to have a job where violence was a frequent and very real part of the day to day work (no, not military or a doorman). The thing was that any self-defense had to have 'reasonable force', and to be aware that any use of a weapon would be questioned. If you just stabbed someone, were they trying to kill you? If you hit someone with a baseball bat, you better have a bloody good reason for having that bat in the first place. Cricket bat? Do you play cricket? Prove it etc etc.

Best weapon you could have in the house? A lovely, old fashioned rolling pin. Like a baseball bat but try to argue why someone wouldn't have one of those around the house.

Nice big handful of 2ft-long patch leads. Ouch.
