You're only going to get charged if the police are involved. I'd be tempted to break his arms, maybe loosen a couple of toe nails and let him walk to the hospital.

Maybe even paint his head.

Well can only tell you what my brother in law, he is an Inspector in the Met, reckons attitudes towards this sort of thing have changed over the years, also said the advice they give most people is not to disturb the burglar(s) but just dial 999.

Most burglars take less than a week to finish their burglarising though.

I didn't say it was good advice, just what plod say to people now.

If it were me and I caught a burglar? I'd smash his fingers and knuckles with a 4 pound club hammer so they were all mushy, then tell plod he tripped when he tried to get out of the dorma window in the attic

If you hit him as he came in then yes you would be ok but if you hit him as he runs out then that's where you could get prosecuted as I understand it.

That`s why after you batter them, you drag them back in the house....
