    Hi,
    Thanks for the link.
Interesting stuff indeed, but it lacks a mandatory point : Cubase VST compatibility : I have around 100 projects which I still want to play with.
    Bye

Doh! Sorry... my heart was in the right place.
Could you not export the tracks to wav or midi? Just a thought. Probably a lot of work for 100 projects though!

I could, indeed. As I could just take a Steinberg Studio Case in order to get this compatibility for a low price.
But now, my problem is that :
    • This unit doesn't seem to have a pair of XLR inputs (no mention anywhere)
    • It won't fit in my rack
    • It won't be available before April (end of March)

OF all these differences, what are the ones that definitely make you want Cubase SX more than SL, despite the price difference ?
If you've read it, you should be able to see what the extra cost of SX is about:
    Differences:
    • SX has a freely configurable extended mixer.
    • SX supports 6 channel surround sound
    • SX has 8 insert fx-slots (SL 5)
    • SX has 32 VSTi slots (SL 16)
    • SX has real time VSTfx with PlusDeEsser powered by SPL
    • SX has automation modes : X-over and Autolatch.
    • SX has better dithering algoritme by it's PlusApogee UV22 HR.
    • Sx has offline process history for all plugins (SL doesn't)
    • SX has pitchshift and timestretch algoritme plus MPEX (better than SL's)
    • SX has mp3 encoding build into the program (SL doesn't)
    • SX has, as you say, full score layout and printing functions (SL doesn't)

    I want it all !!
The difference in prize isn't because of nothing.

    Thanks for your answer.
    Various questions :
    1. MP3 encoding (I have it in iTunes, btw) isn't MP3 limited to 2 channels => surround+mp3 would be incompatible
    2. Better dithering, etc. How many tracks do you dither, day after day ?
    3. Do you really use that much plug ins / VSTi at once ?
    4. Mixer : Isn't automation enough, unless you use it with some Houston gear ?
    5. I do not know what real time vstfx is. I only worked with Cubase until v5/32
    6. Why should I be interested in offline process algorithms ?
    7. Should I pitch shift or timesstretch a sample, I use ReCycle+Reason.

    Hence my question :
I am an old school cubasist, which means I have never used the extra + you mention and I then would seriously like understand why a non-professional like me should prefer sx to sl... unless I wanted to print a nice partition.
Now, please, don't misunderstand me, I am really happy of your emphatical answer : it's good to get point such as yours, I'd just like to be sure Cubase SL will at least perform as well on my AlBook as VST5 did on my P4 PC(XP).
I can still upgrade, after. 8)

    Hei, Mirko.
    a) MP3 and Surround sound is two different formats.
    b) I dither everything I mixdown oh course.
    c) Not use simultanously, but if I'm gonna use them at various times in a track I have to have them loaded and ready for triggering. They operate at different parts of the tracks.
    d) Don't understand your question.
    e) Real time is operating and executing as it happens.
    f) Not "algorithm" but "history". That means you can undo more than you otherwise could.
    g) Only if your in need of it. I can't imagine that you wouldn't be from time to time.
SL will perform well, and I guess that you'll be quite happy with it. I said that I want SX, not that SL is not a good program. Indeed it is.

    Thanks for your answers.
BTW, I also heard of the Novation Remote25Audio Extreme bundle :
Their Remote station with an Audio sampler included + Live, Cubase SE and something else I do not care about...
Everybody is currently answering my need by issuing sexy hardware and software...
I should wait a little until I make a choice.
