Well I really enjoyed it, but them I'm partial to a good old monster movie. Nice perspective on a story that's been told countless times before.

Glad they followed the old school 'don't show too much of the monster too soon'.

I think it's the military code name for it. Not sure why, but then military code names are often incredibly obscure anyway.

Yes doesn't it start saying that the tape was found after the incident, and that they designated the incident codename cloverfield?

fyi military Operation, Excercise and Codenames are usually taken from a pre-written list that has no bearing on the actual event - when a name is needed, they take the next one on the list. Only Amerispams dream up sloganeering ones like 'Desert Storm' . We end up with things like Telic, Chantress etc : designed to be distinctive and easily distinguished over radio comms rather than convey any actual message in and of themselves.
