I have to live there...but in it's defense it's no worse than anywhere else around here, and a lot, lot nicer than many parts of Tameside.

THe best thing is it's easy access to the High Peak and Saddleworth.

Saddleworth Moor is a beautiful area, but I no longer visit because of its association with Brady & Hindley. The last time I was there [some 15 years ago] I became so melancholy thinking about the attrocities of the 60's it spoiled, what should have been, a beautiful day. Sad, because the moor is a great place - I love the view down into Wessenden Valley.

I guess you are settled on where you would like to live but for me that would be too far from Manchester. I hate "commuting" with a passion and would do anything to avoid such wasted time....

    Bloody terrible!!

Around here would be pretty good (Widnes). I'm about 15 minutes walk from Hough Green station, which is about 20 mins train ride from Liverpool Lime Street, and Virgin do a direct to London service, which whilst I've never used is reputed to be very quick.

Thanks for all the info and thoughts. Having spent the weekend in the NW, our shortlist is Holmes Chapel, Nantwich and Hartford, with Hartford being the favourite.

It's well-positioned for pretty much all of our family, reasonably-priced and, though it's not the perfect commuter location, it's OK. It's also where I went to High School and it doesn't seem to have changed since then!

Sho'nuff, but I think you read my post a bit too quickly - Crewe's not somewhere I'd like to buy

From Hartford I can get a slow direct train to Manchester or a quick link to Crewe. I think the fastest service from Crewe-Piccadilly is 36 minutes, but more typically around 45.

EDIT: Shit, you didn't misread my post. I miswrote it. Cripes. I meant Holmes Chapel, Nantwich and Hartford. Sorry
