Microwave Ovens - should we be afraid?

Microwaves are brilliant for melting butter and chocolate for cooking, pretty good for making custard too. And not bad for defrosting stuff and heating up leftovers quickly.

But they're crap at everything else.

Microwaves work by heating up the water molecules in food, so for anything that is normally cooked using heated water they're pretty ace. As Bertram suggested, rice, veggies and fish work fine. Forget the snob factor.

we used to use one for rice but when we moved house we had a smaller kitchen and relegated it to the loft since rice is the only thing we ever used it for. we do eat a lot of rice though.

No, they are awesomes at making plasma, creating ball lightening, melting glass, illuminating neon tubes, exploding eggs etc.
