there could be enough for everyone, it just depends on how much we all want.

The implication of course being that the west would need to significantly degrade their lifestyles. I dont think your self subsistance is really making that big a difference either since I assume you still use cars and electricity which i suspect are going to dwarf the energy used producing food. In fact self subsistance is probably less energy efficient than mechanised farming, food processing etc.

my self subsistence? Where did I mention that?

not sure about your last comment, but I have no more evidence to support any position than you do, so we'll call it quits.

The odd thing is, for dull people, even a glut of something requires competition.

A predictable responses to anything aspirational are sarcasm and cynicism: simply put some members of this group feel compelled to reassert the status quo. I think it's an automatic response.

What is the status quo? Well in this instance that CR is pessimistic and has dystopian views. So cynicism is used to bully him back to behaving as we "expect".

There's a glut of cynicism in this thread. The markets flooded and shares in cynicism are plummeting and yet people are still competing to add their cynical view to the heap. The urge to enforce conformity means some people will compete when there is no need.

Now ordinarily cynicism is a very high value product, it can power rockets, cure cancer, bring about world peace and end starvation - you can eat it and never be hungry and put it in the tank of your car. It is the most useful element on the planet. Whereas self-belief cripples people, embitters them, makes them reach out and spread their misery. isn't it.

Some people want to be unhappy, if they can make other people unhappy - they can pretend unhappy is the norm.

Like most people, I have a set of ideals of what the world should be like, how things ought to be..how we should treat the world and each other.
And like most people, I am loathe to change my own lifestyle to achieve any of these ideals.

Which is rather sad, isn't it?

True. But that's the problem, in the West at least - we think popping a few empty 2 litre plastic milk bottles in the blue bin at the end of the week for recycling instead of chucking them in the bin to go to a landfill is "making a difference", when we need to be radical and really rethink our lifestyle altogether if we honestly care that much.

Truth is I don't think we DO care that much, not if it costs us time, money, effort, comforts...etc.

It's really a product of class. We could live quite comfortably in tents most of the year and we could migrate to milder climes in the winter - the money we'd save not having a mortgage or rent could allow us to live quite comfortably and see our friends and family more. That would be like being a peasant or a gypsy though.

I think civilization is heading into a psychological cul-de-sac marked by circular arguments and a belief that only the wealthy can have influence and vision. People are happy to believe they're helpless and exclude any alternative communities who's continuing success challenges this easy view.
