Default 'real' music as opposed to 'digital' music

    Hello

I just want to check something before I become embedded in this forum.

Is it OK to post / chat about 'real' music?

note: I'm not trying to be provocative by suggesting some music isn't 'real' (I just can't think of a better way to explain what I mean) but I don't create much in the digital domain; it's all real instruments.
I guess, for me, it's more about the creativity than the technology (although I wouldn't be able to do anything without my computer or digital gear)

I just wondered if this is OK here or if the forum is more geared for computer generated stuff. I just don't want to keep posting stuff if it seems out of place.

The reason for asking is because I posted a rough track in the 'Listen Lounge' and a question was asked about the drums sounding 'real'
It is a real drum kit being played but for some reason I feel a bit awkward admitting it; like some part of the track should be sampled or computer generated to be on this forum.

Am I making sense or am I sounding like I need more (or less) caffine??

    Probably both

A lot of computer music magazine is dedicated to real instruments and the best way to record and mix them.

I would say this is an ideal place to become embedded.

you'll be just fine if you drop the use of 'real' as a way of differentiating instruments that don't use computational electrickery from those that do.

    Cheers for the replies.

andychap: that pretty much addresses my concerns. Thanks very much.

de la Mancha: 'real' wasn't my word. It was M.T.Pilot's
    What's a better word?

I have to confess, I haven't bought the mag since issue 3 but I do flick through it when I'm passing Mr William Henry Smith's shop.

I'm going to try and devote more time to music though so will perhaps embark on a subscription.

    Cheers again guys

aha, semantics, don't ya love it

MT Pilot was using 'real' in the sense that you were playing 'real' drums (the acoustic tubs you bash with sticks) as oppose to 'sequenced' samples. 'real' in the sense of you were really playing them, not a recording of someone else that have been resequenced into a pattern.

You talked about 'real' music, which is an altogether different slant. I know you didn't mean it as an insult and I didn't take it that way, just it might be better not to use the term in reference to real music, implying otherwise it is fake

Lots of people here mix and match live acoustic instruments, live electonic instruments, sequencing, sampling, looping and procrastinating. It's not a one or the other situation, it's all music (well most of it anyway ). You're welcome here even if you only use the computer to surf this forum

I historically produced electronic/sequenced/sample based music...however i am now playing with band again, and all of our music uses "real" instruments....some synths and keys...but essentially no sequencing (to speak of)

However we use a combination of "real" drums, electronic drums, mic'ed guitar amps, PODS, Hard Disk Recorders, Cubase to get our final product.

    Whatever it takes

    Have a listen

My music is made of wax.
It looks nice, but don't be fooled into eating it.

It takes a definite skill to make 'fake' music that sounds 'real' imo, moreso than just making 'real' music.
