Default What Cymbals do you reccommend?

    Hey,

I play in a band, and I'm looking for some light hi hats with a nice "chick" sound.
I'm also looking for a light ride, mabye a jazz ride, a dark smallish (around 16") crash, and a bigger (18") thinner crash.

What is generally recommended in terms of brand and model?

Forgot to mention! I'm on a very tight budget, thanks

Since im (mostly) a guitarist i cant really offer too much advice but I love 12 inch recording hats. they just sound so much more articulate and precise than typical 14 rock hats. I like a nice chickka type sound rather than the more splashy rock sound usually.

Depends entirely on your budget; at the bottom end, SOME Stagg stuff is very good (I had a pair of 12" DH hi-hats which exactly fitted what you're looking for sound-wise), but their manufacturing's quite hit-and-miss (properly hand-made) so for every stunner there's half a dozen dogs. In the mid-range Dream cymbals are getting some very good press, particularly for their jazz-style stuff, and the ones I've heard have all been great!

At the higher end you're probably talking the usual suspects (i.e. Zildjian, Sabian and Paiste - the latter in particular make some EXCEPTIONAL 'bygone-era' sounding bronzework, I forget the exact range now), but if you're looking for a vintagey kinda sound it can often be worth having a look at older Zildjian Avedis cymbals - I've got a pair of 12" hats from the 1950s and a 1960s 18" crash/ride which are both tremendous, it'll be a sad day if I ever have to get rid of them.

I have some Stagg cymbals, and they're very good for the money. Hand-hammered cast cymbals for the same price as cheap Sabian pressed/machined cymbals. Find a stockist and have a good try-out.

2nd hand or Stagg cymbals. That's your options. New, decent cymbals don't fit within a "tight budget" Im afraid.

Since no one has mentioned it - Meinl cymbals are very good, especially in the jazz area. Infact, for jazzy type cymbals, I would rather use Meinl than Zildjian/Paiste and Sabian.

2nd hand market will be your best bet.
