Default [Mac] [Advice needed] MOTU 828

I just found an auction for a second-hand MOTU 828.
I know it's limited to 48kHz but it comes at an apparently bargain price : 450 Euros and I am surprisingly considering to get this unless I get some advice.
the interface is 15 months old and hardly got used (mint condition).
I'd use it on my Powerbook (with Logic Pro).
My others possibilities would be :
    • An ESI Pro Quatafire 610 (once they release the OSX driver they've been promising since January, hopefully within the next 4 weeks, so they said).
    • An Edirol FA-101 which is announced for next month
    • An M-Audio 410 about which I've heard bad reviews.

Something I especially like about the MOTU is that its got its pair of XLR inputs on its rear.

Could anybody give me some advice, here ?

A friend of mine has been using the 828 with Logic for a while now without complaint. It's V5 on a powerbook under OS9 if that makes a difference. Probably worth checking on the MOTU site to see if people are having any issues with the drivers under whatever OS you're using.

I LOVE my 828. It's been my main audio i/o for 2+ years now. I use it for all sorts of live and studio recording, and now I'm using it as my audio output for live gigging as well. I've recorded a bunch of live shows on it, gigged with it using Live and Reason, and recorded a ton of radio commericals with it in my studio. I use it with a G4/800 iMac and a G4/800 iBook. Never a problem.

    Highly recommended.

I have heard of serious latency issues with the original MOTU 828 under OSX.
The 828 is still a very good buy - it's held its price for some time.

MOTU are notoriously slow at releasing OSX drivers for their hardware.
The drivers for the 828 Mk-1 do fix most of the latency problems
but don't expect much more future support while the Mk-II and so on
    are out there now.

For the record, I'd like to say that I have no latency issues at all with my 828 (the first generation, not a mkII.) under OSX.

Also, the drivers that MOTU has released are the same for both the MK I and the MK II.

I'm prospecting on audio interfaces for exactly the same setup as Mirko, so thanks everyone for contributing!

I'm sure now that if in doubt, the MOTU will always be a good choice (those tiny meters on the mkII make me almost wish for a mkI...) !

(Mirko, I'm sending you a pm, so wait before you reply!)

    cheers
