How desperate are you to buy or can you wait a while? Microsoft have just put back the relaese of Longhorn ( the 64 bit windows ) until some time next year due to the imminent release of sevice pack 2 for XP. AMD have recently released further AMD64s so the price of the CPUs and MoBos will hopefully soon start to fall. If you can grin and bear it, it might be worth your while waiting till next year.
It's quite unfortunate that microsoft keeps on prosponing windows xp for A64. Aparently the beta (a free download btw) is very stable, and there is no real reason for prosponing it. (apart from intel not having the xeon that supports the same extensions out yet...)
The prices for A64's will keep on falling for quite a while. By the end of the year Amd is planning on selling more processors based on the A64 then xp's and this will bring the prices further down.
Longhorn is actually the codename of the os that is expected to replace windows xp in 2006, not the version of xp that will support amd's 64bit extensions. But like windows xp there should be a home, professional, A64, ititanium ect version of it.
