"Tele and wing it" sounds like a plan. If a Telecaster doesn't work with their music, it's because the music is shit.

For reggae, a bit of slow phaser or wah for the rhythm parts, then a tape delay set up for about 400ms for occasional dub moments. How many repeats? All of them- you want to be able to hit one chord and listen to it turn in to beautiful mush over the next minute or so with no regard for the tempo of the song. Shit like that always blows non-guitarists' miiiiinds

Try and find a Boss RE20 Space Echo pedal, and just hold the right foot pedal down every now and again. That should work.
