Although the Amb-X head is thicker than a regular Amb head (which is only really a medium-weight single ply anyways), it's far from the thickest head on the market... for example, the Emperor X is basically two of them stuck together!

Tuning-wise, thicker heads can quite often tune easier than thinner ones... less prone to stretching out etc. Obviously you should always pre-stretch your heads before use (extra care needed with snare reso heads though) but a thicker head is less likely to stretch or pull when being whacked under tension.

One last quick question, do the thicker heads require more force to get a good tone when playing?

Not really. Tone and response are more down to tuning than how hard you hit.

A bit late now (sorry new to forum last night), but definitely get new heads, and if you can tune fairly well, you're kit will sound brilliant, just look up some tuning techniques on youtube or experiment with the skins you already have.

Skin-wise i've gone for Ambassador clears, and then an ambassador batter, its up to you what style you want, but ambassadors give a nice sound to your kit

Default how to tune drums properly

It'll almost certainly be your drum heads that are the problem. If you aren't to good at drum tuning, you could have the best drum heads available and they'd still sound bad.

I'd say have a look at some of the free info online about how to tune a drum. If you search for drum tuning bible in google that'll help you a lot, and how to tune drums has some soild steps too.

Even better, search on youtube and there are a ton of free vids on how to tune drums.
