    G+ (x6544x)
    Em7 (x7978x)
    Csus2 (x3553x)

As you may be able to see, the augmented 5th lead nicely into the Em7.

    Niiiice.

I'm nearly getting all of this, but what are allthe numbers and x's? ops:

*Edit* Oh shit its like tab isn't it. Never mind
You've probably got it, but just to be clear, it's a way of expressing chord voicings, where you read from left to right and this corresponds to the strings low to high. The "x"-es indicate an unplayed or muted string.

Given that this is a church tune, however, I don't suppose diminished (demolished) chords are allowed?

Anyway, the next Csus2 might work better leaving the G in the soprano, (x5558x).

I hope this isn't seen as unsolicited drivel; I really like chords and voice leading.

Thanks for this Ed - I appreciate the depth you've gone into. You've managed to explain your thinking which I for one find particularly helpful.

The choice of voicings was mostly due to my lack of knowledge of shapes. I came up with the selection on the hoof at the rehearsal. I think the choices functioned acceptably well given that I wasn't performing as the main harmonic backbone of the group - over and above the singers, we had a keyboard player (mostly chord pads), a pianist, a bassist and a flautist as well as muggins 'ere. The piano for one carried the harmony more forcefully than I - I was largely sitting back playing chord pads letting the amp and chorus effect chime the notes out.

I'm going to have to sit down and work through your post in detail to get the full benefit. Thanks again!

Fortunately, the Church has moved on from the view that saw the diminished fifth interval as diabolic (devilish) and diminished chords are fairly common in Christian music.
