Its cheaper, more convenient, portable and versatile than the real thing. It does not (yet) sound the same. Most people who select a JTM45 or Bassman patch have not heard a properly set up original.

As for serious answers, I use both for recording. I have a Vox Tonelab and a Cornford Harlequin (recorded through an Oktava MK012 mic). Both have strengths and weaknesses.

Currently playing with (and preparing to review) the Digitech GNX3000... the "wow" factor is shooting off the scale

That Digi thing looks very interesting - just the sheer convenience of it, and the recording/looping options too.

When you review it - see if they are modelling the actual TS9 distortion sound, or when used as a clean boost. Its a very good boost but a so so tube emulator - the classic TS9 setting is vol up, drive way down, and hitting the amp - so modelling the distorted sounds seems by the by.

Dunno about "proper" tubescreamers, but I really liked the overdrive on the TS7 I had in for repair.

I like the old tranny version of EH's Hot Tubes, but you'd never get Digi modelling that!

Yeah it's great! Like good ol' valve technology too though.

Theres good and bad in digital modelling. I'm very happy with my Pod XT and my V-amp. They enable me to practice, and record directly into a multitrack. Without digital modelling, I would find it very hard to get a decent tone.

Having said that, there are drawbacks. The pod XT for instance isn't too friendly with actual amps, or combined with stomp boxes, and some modellers seem to be nothing more than glorified FX pedals with nasty tones.

Bottom line is that if it gets the job done, it's a good thing.
