It can be done, but the tricky bit is alternating strings and sliding down or up a semitone at the same time to simulate how all notes would be on the same fret in open E. If you get the hang of that, then you can definitely play the first solo of statesboro blues by alternating betweeb two positions - in the key of D, the positions would be 10th fret for strings 1,2 & 6, and 7th fret for strings 3, 4 & 5.

That's basically the crux of the difference in playing lead in open or standard tunings - you just have to move around a hell of a lot more in standard.

I did have an mp3 of me playing that very solo in standard, but I think I deleted it.......
I was trying to remember who posted that!

As I recall, it was a brilliant version and one that made me decide that it is possible to play in standard tuning without compromising the licks.

The bit I can't do properly in the intro is a "rocking back and forth" lick between the B and G strings. In open E the notes fall on the 10th and 8th frets which makes things relatively easy. In standard, the G string needs to be played at the 11th fret resulting in, as you said, a lot of extra moving about.

Still, your example showed that it can be done! Also, I beliebe that Warren Haynes plays the intro in standard on my Allman Brothers "One Way Out" DVD (although I can't quite make out the frets he uses).

I suppose I just need to practice. A lot.

Here's a question - anyone know any nice chord shapes for open tunings?

I'll write out some tasty 7th/diminished pairings I've been using this evening.

You know, with all this interest in slide, and with Beaglefest out of the way, someone with more organisation nouse than me really ought to think about Slidefest '06.........

    Sounds kewl!

Oh, and another thing..... what do we think about minor open tunings? I've never played around with them myself, but the idea that you could fret in front of the slide to make major sounds could be interesting (as oposed to having to fret behind the slide to get minor sounds in a major open tuning.
