I'm in for Tracktion - but I'm quite new to it - so I'd be a 'probably wrong' sort of help!!

I use Cubase but am shit with it!!

Also have a fair experience with Cakewalk, but old versions, not this new fangled Sonar stuff!

I do, however, know a bit about general recording principles, mixing, FX use and so on... so I'm game to offer my "wisdom" where I can!!

I'll volunteer for Garageband - I'm not an expert but I should be able to help out beginners at least.

what about a buddy for Audacity?
Its likely to be what beginner guitarists may be able to use. Coz the thought of learning guitar and learning one of those complicated programmes is just tooooooo much.

I really really need to know how to record and mix, so some simple walkthroughs or tips would be good.

Oh well I just began, so here is my tips.

    1) Recorders are cheap. 450 quid gets over 16 tracks. 8 tracks digtital from someone like Zoom or Bheringer will not break the bank.

    2) Get one with Phantom Power!!!

    3) Shure SM57 or Beta 57 is fine for electrics.

    4) Vocals and accoustics will sound a lot better with a condensor mic.

    5) Big, sexy Large Diaphramme mics sound best (I use one, and have just bought a pricey Valve one which blows my others out the water BUT they pick up a fly farting from 1,000 metres. Great for clean accoustic players, but if your technique is suspect, probably not the best thing. From what you describe your own playing as a small diaphramme instrument condesor mic, (I use a Shure SM81 as a close mic and gigging mic, Vim Fuego has a cheaper, but still damm fine version of the same, so ask him about it) placed behind the bridge (and away from your fretting) may well work better. A Rhode NT4 will give stereo from one mic.

    6) What you spend is what you get. Condensors range from 35 quid (Beringer) to £,7,000 Telefunken U87 Valve mic. Shure Stage Mics (SMs) are decent, tough and workable. They are also quite cheap.

    7) Don't drop Large Diaphramme mics they will break, especially cheap ones.

    8) Get the kit, get closed, loud headphones, play with it and see what comes up,

I was a novice 2 months ago. My soundclick is testament to the progress an idiot who has a kid and a full time job can achieve with trial and error l(and advice from Goiji) so have a listen, then listen to someone like Adrian Clark or Clarky to see what knowledge and talent brings to the party.

I wouldn't recommend an SM58 for recording vocals... you really do want a condensor mic of some ort.

I am very impresssed with the sound I am getting from the Behringer B1 that I have. I always used an Audio Technica AT3035, which cost at least twice what the Behrginer did bit it is too "bright" and trebly for my voice and I jsut can't get the vocal tones that I want.

The Behringer gives me a better tone for my voice.... though the AT sounded very good with my old singer... he was FAR better than me though!

I'd agree with you on SM58s (anyone want to buy mine). Smell of pubs straight out the box!! Buying one was my first recording mistake.

(But you have to hear my new Valve Mic. Wow. Simply Wow.
